Best Water Purifier For Home In India – 2019

A normal human consumes 2 liters of water everyday; water is a major carrier of the world’s most dangerous diseases. Combine these two facts and it becomes pretty obvious that having access to clean drinking water is essential for any household. Which begs the question about the best water purifier for home in India. Firstly, if you are living somewhere temporarily as a single man/woman, it makes sense to get one of those 20L Bisleri water bottles:

It’s enough for an individual for about a week, however for families, there is really no alternative to getting a good water purifier. This where I wish to help with a list of the best water purifier for home in India.

How To Choose The Best Water Purifier?

While doing my research for this articcle, I looked at the following things:

  • Storage capacity: It’s important for families to have a reliable supply of water and also for people who live in areas with frequent power cuts. Anything between 6-8L should be good enough.
  • TDS Rating: Depending on your water supply, you can ascertain the expected TDS (total dissolved solids) levels. Based on the expected TDS levels you can choose the filtering technology. It is not always necessary to go for the expensive RO+UV+UF filter, sometimes just an RO filter might be enough.
Water SupplyExpected TDSFiltration Technology Needed
Municipal Water (Sourced from river,lake)1-200 TDSGravity Based or UV or Boiled water
Ground Water (Bore well, pumps, tube well)200-2000 TDSRO or RO+
Multiple Sources (Ground + Municipal)1-2000 TDSRO or RO+
Others>2000 TDSIndustrial grade water purifier
  • Maintenance Costs: Annual maintenance costs are an important consideration. They may include frequency of internal clean-up, RO membrane longevity etc. I’ve added details regarding maintenance costs wherever possible.
  • Installation Costs: Most companies like Kent, AquaGuard, Blue Star etc provide free installations while most unknown brands don’t. Installation of a water purifier costs around Rs. 500 if the company doesn’t provide one for free.
  • Additional Features: Features like TDS controller, alarms for membrane/filter change, taste enhancers can also be considered when purchasing a high end water purifier.

Best Water Purifier For Home In India – 2019

1. Eureka Forbes Aquasure from Aquaguard Delight RO+UV+MTDS

Without a doubt Eureka Forbes Aquaguard is one of the most well known water purifier companies in India. This particular model is one of their best-selling and well reviewed purifiers. It is also reasonably priced at around Rs. 11,000 for a branded water purifier. It can be used for TDS levels upto 2000 with a 7L storage capacity, which means it is good for all water sources including municipal, ground water, bore well etc. The Aquasure has all the features you could only expect from a high end water filter like LED indicators for product status, purification, tank full and alert for services or errors, high capacity (6000L) cartridge with a 1 year warranty, 5 stage filtration is also a very premium looking purifier.

Installation Charge: Free
Expected Annual Maintenance cost: Below Rs.3000
Miscellaneous: Pre-filter is not needed unless your source water is extremely dirty

2. P-LINK® Black Edition Water Purifier

Yes I had not heard of this company either but it remains one of the best value for money water purifiers I could find. It costs around Rs. 7500 on amazon (without any special discounts). This price is great for an electric water purifier and when you include features like TDS controller, LED indicators, free pre-filter (other companies charge extra Rs. 1000 for this), high 12L water storage capacity, multi-stage filtration process, mineral addition cartridge among others…I don’t think there is another better value for money RO water purifier in India…! If you are worried about quality, then know that it comes with 1 year warranty for electrical parts and all filters, except UV Lamp

Installation Charge: Rs. 499
Expected Annual Maintenance cost:  Around Rs. 2000
Miscellaneous: Amazing Value for money, comes with free pre-filter and mineral cartridge

3. KENT Grand 8-Litres Wall-Mountable RO + UV/UF + TDS Controller

The ultimate best seller on Amazon! Thousands of positive reviews so why is it 3rd on my list? Well for starters, I don’t like it’s price. I understand one has to pay a premium when buying branded products but I’m still not very happy with it’s price. Having said that, let’s talk about the features of the Kent Grand and why is it so popular a purchase:
Just like the P-Link water purifier added above, this water purifier has all the high end features you could want. It’s good enough for TDS upto 2500 which almost makes it an industrial grade water purifier. Because it’s purification is so intense, some essential minerals might also be lost in the process, so they’ve added a mineral cartridge to restore the minerals. Honestly, there’s really nothing wrong with this purifier, it’s prefect, just a bit pricey in my opinion….

Installation Charge: Free
Expected Annual Maintenance cost:  Around Rs. 3000
Miscellaneous: Perfect water purifier for those with a decent budget

4. Ruby Water Purifier RO+UV+UF+TDS with Auto Flush & Display

Another value for money water purifier from a relatively unknown brand. Water filtration is not a very new or complicated technology. I am confident I can even assemble my own water purifier with some parts and a case. So why pay the extra thousands of rupees just for a brand name? Infact, I will go so far as to say that this water purifier is better than most others from expensive brands. It has an awesome LED indicator that keeps track of every step of the filtration process also has a TDS controller so you can control the TDS as you wish. I’m not mentioning all the normal features because it has them all along with some unique ones like auto flushing every 15 mins to keep the membrane free from clogs, just look at it’s amazon page for more. Can highly recommend this one…

Installation Charge: Rs. 500
Expected Annual Maintenance cost:  Around Rs. 2000
Miscellaneous: Amazing Value for money, some very impressive features like TDS controller and auto flushing.

5. Faber Glaxy Plus RO+UV+UF+MAT, 9 Liters

Looking for something affordable to treat hard water (TDS 1000-2500)? Then this is pretty great option. It’s one of the few water purifiers with an 8-stage purification process at this price and it does a great job too. The slightly above average storage capacity of 9L is an additional bonus. While I only remember the name Faber for the Faber Castels I used to use in school, this is a completely different company. Having said that, this water purifier does have a pretty premium looking feel to it. I like this one.

Installation Charge: Rs. 500
Expected Annual Maintenance cost:  AMC starts from Rs.2000 and goes upto Rs. 6500 per annum depending upon the services and parts/filters covered.

Miscellaneous: Amazing Value for money, some very impressive features like TDS controller and auto flushing.

Best Non-Electric Water Purifiers In India – 2019

For people who get municipal water, their TDS is expected to be below 200. Non-electric gravity based water filters are great for such people. Apart from the obvious benefits of not using any electricity or wasting water, gravity based filters are considerably cheaper than RO purifiers. Here a couple of the best non-electric water filters for your consideration:

1. Purella Gravity Water Purifier with 3 stage Filtration

One of the issues people have with non-electric purifiers is the that the taste of the water does not change even after being purified. So your water continues to taste like tap water in spite of purification. The 3 step filtration process of this Pueralla water purifier which involves the sediment filter, Activated Carbon Block(ACB), and UFM technology, is said to improve the taste of the water. This is more than what you can expect from a gravity based water purifier. I also design and premium look of this filter, probably the best below Rs. 2500 in my opinion.

2. Tata Swach Non Electric Cristella

Tata Swach Cristella uses a technology that’s a little different from the others. Instead of some carbon based filter, what you get is a TATA bulb that filters approximately 3000 liters of water. The bulb comes with a indicator that goes red when the bulb needs changing, you can purchase a new one from amazon for Rs. 549. Other than that this is a pretty generic water filter and will work as expected. The water storage capacity at 9L is enough for a family of 4.

RO or RO+

There is some debate about whether one should choose a RO purifier or something with more labels attached to it i.e RO+UV+UF etc. The benefit of a RO purifier is that the annual maintenance cost and overall price are a bit lower, and you basically get quality drinking water. The benefits of UV+UF technology is that they kill any remaining impurities/bacteria and you get crystal clear water. I personally would be okay with just a RO purifier but I can understand people may want RO+UV+UF for their piece of mind. The price difference comes down to around 1000-2000 annually, so it’s not a big enough amount for me to unequivocally recommened RO purifiers. In the end, I guess, the decision is yours. Best Water Purifier Brand

There are many brands these days for water purifiers, it is mainly because there are no patents associated RO+ technology and hence anyone can manufacture water purifiers as long as they have the parts. Still there are some manufacturers that are old and have a reputation. Based on my research I would say that the best brand for water purifiers is Eureka Forbes Aquaguard (I rank it over Kent or Blue Star or TATA etc.). There are many models associated with Aquaguard and all of them have decent ratings. I also find Aquaguard products to be reasonable priced based on their features. Their customer support and AMC plans are good too.

Final Thoughts

I would consider this a comprehensive enough article for those looking to purchase a water purifier. I would say to not be scared of trying some new brand when it comes to water purifiers. As long as it uses generic parts and membranes, it would be more cost effective to get something from a new brand instead of the over-priced Kent or Aquaguard. However, if customer support is a priority for you, go with an established brand.
